Contemporary Dance Techniques for Gymnasts — gymnastics dance program at Smartinan
About this program

What this program covers

Contemporary dance techniques offer gymnasts something classical training rarely does: the experience of moving from weight and release rather than constant tension and control.

Gymnasts are often strong and precise but struggle with the softer, grounded qualities that contemporary choreography requires. Judges and audiences notice when a gymnast is performing shapes rather than movement — and contemporary technique directly addresses that gap.

This course draws from release technique, Laban movement analysis, and contact principles to give gymnasts a broader physical vocabulary. Nothing here conflicts with gymnastics training. The goal is addition, not substitution.

Specific areas covered

  • Floor work: rolling, grounding, and weight transfer sequences
  • Release technique applied to upper body and spine
  • Suspension and fall dynamics to create contrast in phrasing
  • Spatial pathways and three-dimensional movement
  • Improvisation structures to develop personal movement quality

The course includes short improvisation tasks in every session. Gymnasts who find improvisation uncomfortable often describe this as the most useful part of training — it reveals habitual patterns and creates new options.

Led by Annika Vesterinen, contemporary performer and movement educator with background in both dance sport and theater.

Sessions are open to gymnasts aged 14 and above, no prior contemporary dance experience required.
